Our responsibility to preserve freedom for future generations

In 1801, the Reverend Matthias Burnett said to God in posterity, "You are accountable for your rights and your rulers." He continued, "Let not your children have reason to curse you for giving up those rights and prostrating those institutions which your fathers delivered to you."

These words are as relevant today as they were when they were spoken. We are the beneficiaries of an incredible Declaration of Independence and a Constitution that has created the most successful, most powerful, most free, and most benevolent nation in the history of the world. It is our responsibility to preserve it on our watch and make sure we pass it intact to the next generation.

The Reverend Burnett also said, "Today I want to ask you to do the same thing. To be willing to give of your life." He didn't mean that we should sacrifice our lives, but that we should be willing to invest our time, energy, and resources in defending our freedom.

Here are some specific ways that we can do our part to preserve freedom for future generations:

• Study the Constitution and our history. The more we understand our rights and the principles that America was founded on, the better equipped we will be to defend them.
• Get involved in the political process. Vote in elections, contact your elected representatives, and support organizations that are working to defend our Constitution.
• Teach the next generation about freedom. Talk to your children and grandchildren about the importance of freedom and how to protect it.

The Reverend Burnett also said that we should be willing to "stand up and speak truth regardless of what it costs you." This means being willing to speak out against injustice and tyranny, even when it is unpopular or difficult.

Defending freedom is not always easy. It requires sacrifice and commitment. But it is essential if we want to leave a better future for our children and grandchildren.

Let's all do our part to preserve freedom for future generations.
