James Forten: A self-made man and a champion of freedom

James Forten was a self-made man and a champion of freedom. He was born into slavery in Philadelphia in 1766, but he escaped to freedom during the American Revolution. Forten went on to become a successful sailmaker and businessman. He also became a leading abolitionist and advocate for the rights of African Americans.

Forten was active in the abolitionist movement and helped to found the Free African Society of Pennsylvania. He was also a member of the American Anti-Slavery Society and the Underground Railroad. Forten used his wealth and influence to support the abolitionist cause and to help enslaved people escape to freedom.

In addition to his work as an abolitionist, Forten was also a successful businessman. He owned his own sailmaking business and was one of the wealthiest African Americans of his time. Forten used his wealth to support his family and to help other African Americans.

Forten died in 1842 at the age of 76. He is remembered as a self-made man, a champion of freedom, and a successful businessman.
