The Blessing of Religious Liberty

Religious liberty is the foundation of the American experiment. The First Amendment to the Constitution states that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Religious liberty protects one's right to practice any faith, or no faith at all, without government interference or compulsion.

Religious freedom was profoundly important to many early colonists and founders, who came to America seeking refuge from religious persecution in Europe. They knew firsthand the dangers of living under a state-imposed religion that restricts conscience and commands obedience.

Today, we must vigilantly defend this hard-won liberty that too many take for granted. Religious freedom means all faiths are equal under the law, and no group faces discrimination or disadvantage based on their beliefs. This freedom thrives through mutual understanding and respect between people of different faiths.

At its best, faith can awaken our noblest values of compassion, justice, and service to others. But religion can also be misused to sow division and hatred. We must stand united against extremism or oppression in the name of religion. The antidote is an inclusive society where all people of conscience can contribute to the common good.

Religious diversity strengthens America. As Dr. Martin Luther King said, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” When liberty reigns, religion uplifts society. Each prayer, each humble act of service, and each person empowered to live their values makes our nation better and brighter.

But freedom requires moral responsibility. One cannot justify hatred or harm toward others in the name of religion. We must treat others as we wish to be treated, following the Golden Rule taught by nearly all faiths.

In this spirit, people of all backgrounds can unite to build understanding, confront injustice, and serve humanity. We become more faithful to our principles when we defend the liberty of others. By cherishing our shared freedom, and the diversity it allows, America’s sacred light of religious liberty grows ever brighter.
